The Baltica Folklore Festival\u2019s Capital Days\u00a0<\/span>are<\/span>\u00a0opening its gates for three days<\/span>!\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Minister of Culture Heidy Purga, and Tallinn Mayor Peeter Raudsepp will greet the\u00a0<\/span>festival-goers<\/span>. The festive atmosphere will be created by performers from Saaremaa:\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Ammuker<\/span>\u00a0folk singing group from the\u00a0<\/span>S\u00f6rvemaa<\/span>\u00a0Heritage Society, the\u00a0<\/span>S\u00f6rvemaa<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>S\u00f6rmitsejad<\/span>\u00a0instrumental ensemble and\u00a0<\/span>folk dance<\/span>\u00a0group<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

We present to you the exquisite and exemplary folk costume ensembles of Estonia\u2019s parishes, with musical interludes performed by soloists on the bagpipe, hiiu kannel (talharpa), kannel, violin, and accordion. With the help of folk costume masters, we will learn to appreciate the beauty and uniqueness of the details, thereby gaining a wealth of new knowledge about both the history and traditions of folk costumes.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

At\u00a0Rootsi-Mihkli\u00a0Church,\u00a0the\u00a0door\u00a0opens\u00a0to\u00a0a\u00a0deeper\u00a0and\u00a0more\u00a0timeless\u00a0layer\u00a0of folk\u00a0tradition\u2014where\u00a0song\u00a0is\u00a0a\u00a0way\u00a0to\u00a0create\u00a0the\u00a0world,\u00a0to\u00a0order\u00a0it,\u00a0to\u00a0give\u00a0it\u00a0meaning, and\u00a0to\u00a0maintain\u00a0a\u00a0connection\u00a0with\u00a0the\u00a0sense\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0sacred\u00a0within\u00a0oneself\u00a0and in\u00a0the\u00a0surrounding\u00a0world.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0audience\u00a0will\u00a0have\u00a0the\u00a0opportunity\u00a0to\u00a0sing\u00a0along\u00a0to\u00a0lyrical\u00a0runic\u00a0songs\u00a0about\u00a0the\u00a0creation\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0world\u00a0and\u00a0the\u00a0star\u00a0maiden,\u00a0listen\u00a0to\u00a0folk-style\u00a0choral\u00a0tunes, and\u00a0experience\u00a0the\u00a0church\u00a0singing\u00a0heritage\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0Old\u00a0Believers\u00a0as\u00a0well\u00a0as\u00a0the\u00a0singing\u00a0traditions\u00a0of\u00a0other\u00a0peoples.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The songs and instrumental music will be performed by the\u00a0runicsong\u00a0group\u00a0Ammuker, the\u00a0T\u00e4helinnud\u00a0folk group from Kambja Ignatsi Jaagu School, the\u00a0runicsong\u00a0ensemble\u00a0V\u00e4ike\u00a0Hellero, folk musicians from the\u00a0Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre, the\u00a0Nade\u017eda\u00a0ensemble of the\u00a0Peipsi\u00a0Old Believers\u2019 Cultural Society,\u00a0runicsong\u00a0singer\u00a0Urmas Kalla, the harp players from the ensemble\u00a0Vormsi\u00a0Talharpajad,\u00a0kannel\u00a0player\u00a0Kertu-Liis \u00d5nnis, and folk musician\u00a0Kulno Malva\u00a0on the accordion and bagpipes.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

International\u00a0guests\u00a0at\u00a0the\u00a0Baltica\u00a0folklore\u00a0festival\u00a0include\u00a0the\u00a0Czech folk\u00a0ensemble\u00a0Ku\u017eelovjan,\u00a0the\u00a0Lithuanian\u00a0folk\u00a0group\u00a0Judl\u0117, and\u00a0the\u00a0folk\u00a0group\u00a0from\u00a0the\u00a0Autonomous\u00a0University of\u00a0Quer\u00e9taro\u00a0in Mexico,\u00a0the\u00a0ensemble\u00a0Mariachi\u00a0Real de Santiago, and\u00a0the\u00a0trio\u00a0Titanes\u00a0Huastecos.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0L\u00e4\u00e4ne County\u00a0labajalg\u00a0dances are lively, consisting of short, twirling steps that\u00a0immediately\u00a0draw the couple into a spin.\u00a0Surely\u00a0you\u2019ve\u00a0swung on a swing as a child or spun around holding hands with a friend and felt the joy of it! You\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0have to forget that same joy as you grow\u00a0older\u2014spinning\u00a0in the\u00a0labajalg\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0half as wild as swinging on a swing, but the joy is at least just as great. And if your head starts spinning, you can keep dancing side by side in the meantime.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We\u2019ll\u00a0explore the dance tunes characteristic of the historical regional traditions of L\u00e4\u00e4ne County.\u00a0We\u2019ll\u00a0learn to play a couple of authentic, old-fashioned polkas and\u00a0labajalg\u00a0tunes accompanied by the accordion and the Jew\u2019s harp, which will get both musicians and dancers\u2019 heads spinning with joy. You can\u00a0participate\u00a0with either a chromatic or a diatonic instrument.\u00a0We\u2019ll\u00a0learn tunes in G, D, F, or C major, depending on the capabilities of the participants\u2019 instruments.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition, we\u2019ll introduce the ancient Komi Anbur alphabet, which dates back to the 14th century, and give you the chance to write your name in this historic script. Experience Azerbaijan\u2019s rich cultural heritage through the art of carpet weaving and a traditional tea ceremony. The workshop will be led by Azerbaijanis living in Estonia\u2014carpet weaver and painter Rovshan Nur and Arzu Guliyeva, an Azerbaijani woman born in Estonia. Participants will have the opportunity to try their hand at basic carpet-weaving techniques and learn to interpret the meanings of patterns. The authentic Azerbaijani tea-drinking tradition will also be introduced, complete with sweets and explanations of customs.\u00a0 <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A refreshment area is open, offering festivalgoers a chance to take a break and enjoy nourishment.\u00a0 <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
