Each year, the Estonian Folklore Council\u00a0<\/span>honours<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>individuals<\/span>\u00a0and groups whose conscious and dedicated efforts have made folklore visible and passed it on in an inspiring way. We\u00a0<\/span>honour<\/span>\u00a0the Instructor, Folklore Group,\u00a0<\/span>Organiser<\/span>, Initiative, and Folklore Curator of the Year. Special recognition is given to the recipients of the P\u00c4KU Heritage Culture Award<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>Teotugi<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>Torop<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Award. Between the award presentations, we will\u00a0<\/span>witness<\/span>\u00a0an exciting story of the ideal\u00a0<\/span>synergy<\/span>\u2014a dialogue\u2014between dance and music that arises when a melody lifts a dancer off the ground, who in turn inspires the musician to play with ever-greater passion.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

Folk\u00a0<\/span>musician<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>violinist<\/span>\u00a0Regina M\u00e4nd\u00a0<\/span>takes<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>listeners<\/span>\u00a0on a\u00a0<\/span>journey<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>to<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>rich<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>distinctive<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>world<\/span>\u00a0of folk\u00a0<\/span>music<\/span>\u00a0in\u00a0<\/span>her<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>home<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>region<\/span>\u00a0of P\u00e4rnu\u00a0<\/span>County<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>This<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>region<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>has<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>long<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>been<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>renowned<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>for<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>its<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>village<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>wedding<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>musicians<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>particularly<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>its<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>violinists<\/span>. This workshop takes participants on a one-hour journey into the unique world of Southeast Estonian folk music, introducing them to a repertoire that has historically been characteristic of this region. From the traditions of violin, accordion, and\u00a0kannel\u00a0music, the workshop will feature spirited\u00a0<\/span>kargus-<\/span>kasatski\u00a0and chastushka tunes, as well as some calmer dance music. Both diatonic and chromatic instruments are welcome.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We will learn lesser-known versions of well-known dance tunes and, with a bit of luck,\u00a0perhaps even\u00a0something completely new. All instruments are welcome, but we will learn pieces in G or D major.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the Georgian dance workshop, participants will learn the Adjaruli, a dance originating from the Adjara region of Georgia on the Black Sea coast. It is a joyful dance, the movements of which initially mimic the swaying of ocean waves but quickly transform into a pantomime depicting the daily activities of Adjarian women, such as making cheese or spinning wool. Adjaruli is a colorful, humorous, and lively dance that leaves everyone with a smile on their face by the end.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A hands-on workshop introducing traditional henna art and its cultural significance in different countries,\u00a0civilisations\u00a0and in Moroccan celebrations. Also, the background of the patterns and uses is elaborated. Participants will have the possibility to\u00a0see,\u00a0how henna is prepared. Perepetch are open-faced pies made from unleavened dough and filled with meat, mushrooms, or vegetables, topped with a mixture of egg and milk. This is an old traditional dish of Udmurt cuisine, served in honour of the most esteemed guests. The name comes from the Udmurt word <\/span>peres\u2019mon<\/span><\/i> \u201cold age\u201d, because the folding of the dough\u2019s edges resembles wrinkles. Once upon a time, these pies were baked only for funerals, then for celebrations, and today perepetch are the hallmark of Udmurt cuisine.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A refreshment area is open, offering festivalgoers a chance to take a break and enjoy nourishment.\u00a0 <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0tent\u00a0also\u00a0features\u00a0a\u00a0creative\u00a0corner\u00a0for\u00a0children,\u00a0where\u00a0they\u00a0can\u00a0find\u00a0inspiration\u00a0from\u00a0Moroccan\u00a0folklore,\u00a0patterns, and\u00a0symbols\u00a0for\u00a0coloring\u00a0and\u00a0drawing. The Mulgi Culture Institute showcases and sells literature in the Mulgi dialect. Visitors can enjoy chatting in Mulgi and discussing topics related to preserving the Mulgi language and culture. There are fun word games and riddles for those interested. The Mulgi people will also be bringing local handicrafts and a few surprises.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

<\/i><\/i><\/span>V\u00f5ru County tent<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div>

The V\u00f5ru County tent brings together the museums of Old V\u00f5romaa, the Old V\u00f5romaa Handicrafts Centre, and the V\u00f5ro Institute. Vilve Oja teaches how to make embroidered belts, the V\u00f5ro Institute offers exciting word games, and there is also V\u00f5ro-language literature and local handicrafts on display.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

<\/i><\/i><\/span>Muhu Folk Costume Advisory Board <\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div>

In the tent of the Muhu Folk Costume Advisory Board, you can see both modern and traditional Muhu embroidery, as well as various heritage artifacts.
