HILDEGARD’S GARDEN

SATURDAY, JUNE 3

  • 11:00 Opening of the doors of Hildegard’s Garden in Old Town, introduction to the garden. 

Hildegard of Bingen (Hildegard von Bingen) was an influential but modest nun who lived in the 12th century – a mystic, visionary, poet, composer, as well as a systematic describer of nature and natural healing methods of her era.  

  • 12:00 “Under the spell of scents” – a guided tour of Hildegard’s herb garden.  

We will introduce the medicinal and aromatic plants of the Old Town garden, including those that are not usually grown in the home garden. Plant knowledge club, natural healing, and scents. 

Facilitator: Rohelise Stuudio Lõhnatuba (Green Studio Fragrance Room).  

  • 13:00 Lecture “Hildegard’s herbs as kitchen and edible plants – everyday food is medicine”. 

We will introduce selected plants from Hildegard’s garden and their uses in the context of Hildegard’s descriptions and uses. Facilitator: Hildegard Society, Heli Kann.  

  • 12:00-15:00 “Getting to know plants. Herbs and their uses. Hildegard’s recipes”. 

Various workshops in the garden to learn about plants and introduce Hildegard’s healing methods. Supervised by: Hildegard Society and Hildegard’s Garden. 

  • 14:00-15:00 Presentation and introduction of medieval sword art.  

Medieval sword art and Tai-chi teachings are taught by a Taoist monk with 17 years of experience, sword fighter, masseur-therapist, and member of Hildegard’s Garden in the Old Town. 

  • 14:00-17:00 Children in the garden.  

14:00 Children’s playroom and workshop, children’s fair stall. 

16:00 Children’s plant knowledge club and quiz. 

There is time and space to play in the garden: petanque and croquet. 

  • 15:00 Opening of the plant catalog. Thanking the supporters and authors. Introduction of the catalog.  

The plant catalog is a “book” in the Old Town Garden that introduces the medicinal plants of Hildegard of Bingen. Using a QR code, you can quickly find and listen to a story introducing the plants selected for the book. The stories are presented in several languages. 

  • 17:00 Musical program: “Journey of Adam Olearius”.  

Medieval lyricism in a medieval garden. The first Estonian-language secular poetry of Lower Germany and Tallinn. Performed by: Timur Mazitov – acoustic guitar, and vocals. 

 

SUNDAY, JUNE 4 

  • 12:00 Opening of the doors of Hildegard’s Garden in Old Town, introduction to the garden.

A walk in Towers’ Square Park. Facilitator:  Roheline Stuudio (Green Studio). 

  • 15:00 Liisi Ojamaa Songs of Old Town of Tallinn – Program “A bridge glimmering over lives”. 

Songs written in a new medieval style to Liisi Ojamaa’s poems. Performed by Timur Mazitov on acoustic guitar. 

 

The events in Hildegard’s Garden are organized by Vanalinna Selts (The Old Town Society).
